Job Title:                  REFINERY INSPECTOR

Location:                  MCPHERSON, KS

 

SUMMARY

To develop and maintain an inspection program to assure the mechanical integrity of pressure containing equipment and piping in the refinery. Help administer a preventive maintenance program for the refinery fixed equipment and provide technical assistance in the repair and correction of equipment deficiencies.  To keep inspection records updated and coordinate outside inspection and NDE services with minimal supervision.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

  • Perform internal, external and NDE inspections of pressure vessels, towers, heat exchangers, piping, tanks, heaters and other miscellaneous equipment to determine the condition of the refinery assets.
  • Maintain a repetitive inspection program using PCMS software and RBI analysis to identify frequency, extent, corrosion rates and remaining life analysis of all piping and equipment.
  • Establish inspection scope and maintain all inspection records both electronically and hard copies for each piece of equipment and pipe circuits in the assigned units.
  • Coordinate outside inspectors during turnarounds and on stream inspections as well as NDE technicians as needed.
  • Make recommendations concerning the purchases of inspection equipment needed to accomplish the assigned duties.
  • Maintain PMI program on alloy materials to ensure proper material selection and field application.
  • Perform Q/A function for both shop fabricated equipment and field installed new construction projects as directed.
  • Approve hydrostatic, pneumatic, and in service testing of vessels, piping and tanks for both new construction and post repairs.
  • Advise and offer mentoring opportunities to junior inspectors and technicians.
  • Update and maintain inspection documentation, piping and equipment isometrics associated with Management of Change documents.
  • Coordinate with unit Mechanical and Process Engineers, contractors, maintenance and operations personnel as required on various matters, including inspection code requirements, condition of equipment, recommendations on repairs and quality of workmanship.
  • Maintain understanding of existing inspection techniques and research new methods to improve NCRA’s inspection program.
  • Perform other duties as requested or needed.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Two year certificate from college or technical school; or a high school graduate with a minimum of five years experience in an oil refinery or related industry; OR equivalent combination of education and experience as well as all industry standard testing certifications required to perform work. 
  • At least one year of supervision or performance of inspection activities is required. 
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft applications, API Standards, ASME Codes, and PCMS inspection software is required.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Level II certifications in Non-Destructive Examination techniques in accordance with the American Society of Nondestructive Testing  (ASNT).
  • Recommended Practice SNT-TC-1A for UT and RT and be able to perform PT, MT, and VT inspections. 
  • Must be a certified inspector in accordance with API 510 and API 570 with the ability to obtain API 653 and AWS Certified Welding Inspector within two years of employment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, mechanical drawings and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of NCRA employees, contract employees and vendors.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals as well as have an understanding of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Above average proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related applications.  Knowledge of PCMS inspection software a plus.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
